Lights Out: Ah, the ol’ “human Jiu-Jitsu Academy grappling dummy” prank.

Works every time.

Holland Open

The competition that I was going to Amsterdam for in February has been postponed over a month. Devastated, but I’m still going over to train and be a tourist.

Frozen river outside the club. Too tired to be witty. Just wanted some love and to let everyone know we’re not eating each others corpses. Yet.

My second fight in the -73kg novice division at Spartan Grapple Challenge.

My first fight in the -73kg novice division at Spartan Grapple Challenge.

My first win in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition. The fight lasted overall nearly 12 minutes due to 2 overtimes and so some of it is cut out in order for it to fit the whole video under 10 minutes. I fought in the under 78 kg and under 18 months training division. In the video, I’m competing against a very strong, very polite: Chris Lane.

Rob put together a highlight reel from some of the training sessions at Gracie Barra Swansea that took place in August. It’s only a short video as he’s been busy MMA training but I have a nice cameo and Lee Jabarian plays the key role of Conan the Jabarian.

Two Month-ary

This week I will be marking my 2 month 6 week anniversary from when I started learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by travelling up to Hereford for my first competition at the Gi Ground fighting Championships. While even though I will only be competing against four other first time competitors, after two months I’ll be happy with losing by decision at least once. That’s not to say that I won’t try for a win, but I’ll be focusing on gaining experience mainly. EDIT: I kind of got the date wrong when posting.

Wax On, Wax Off

I haven’t found the time to do a nice lengthy blog post in quite some time now. The main reason of this is because I’ve finally started practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu which I’ve wanted to try for over a year at least. My brother-in-law, Rob has been practising it for almost 4 years and I’ve always taken interest in it but I was dreadfully afraid of receiving some serious injuries after listening to a few horror stories and obviously a few clips of UFC. This summer, I finally decided I was going to at least try it. I kept putting off going by 1) Forgetting to actually go and 2) Not having a clue what to wear to training as I was without a gi. Just over two weeks ago, Rob offered to give me his old gi and also lent me a handful of the early UFC Tournaments on DVD. In the days before my first session, I watched some of the UFC DVD’s and managed to glimpse how technical BJJ is on its own. Currently, every fighter in the UFC will use a collection of martial arts, making it harder to spot the BJJ impact on an opponent. Royce Gracie, son of the founder of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (Now known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) introduced the world to BJJ by winning the early tournaments with ease. Two weeks later and I’ve gone to nearly every session, walked away easier and held my head up that little bit higher each time.
